Job Update!

3 day summary: The contrast between the overly-organized, and the not at all.

Job trials: Australia's way of "testing to see if you are right for the position" aka getting a few hours of free labor before they decide if they actually want to hire you.

After a completely unnecessary, overly formal, 1.5hr group interview for a gelateria, I was called back for a painfully long, again overly formal, 3 hour trial, which included checklists, grading sheets, and a solid hour of making and scooping gelato into a cup and perfecting my flat top and cone formations.... and I mean PERFECTING. While I appreciate the organization of your business... I think you might need to deflate your ego slightly. It's a gelateria. It's not rocket science. Although playing with liquid nitrogen does make it feel a bit like it haha. And for all of your attention to detail, and ocd tendencies, I'm not entirely sure how you left out TASTE TESTING... ugh.

After the gelateria trial, I had about half an hour to cry over the fact that I now missed out on soccer for the second weekend in a row, and then I went off to a job trial at Roccoco, a restaurant on Acland St. in St. Kilda, where my roommate Emily works. After working for 3 hours running food and cleaning in the wonderfully peppy and friendly atmosphere that is the world of food service, and no foreseeable end to my shift, I went on a mission to find the manager to find out when I could go home.... completely flustered, and a bit confused as to who I even was, he apologized and told me I should have gone home over an hour ago.... fabulous. So what was the conclusion of my trial? "Well, to be honest, I didn't see you while you were working, so I'm not sure how you did, but I'm assuming you were fine.... I don't know how many hours we have to offer, or what our shift availability is even like... I don't do the scheduling... but give me your number, and I will let you know.... by the way, what was your name?" Good grief. Take some notes from the gelateria haha. "Oh, could you maybe work tomorrow?"... "No". I'm getting better at saying no.

6 hours of work. No pay. But yay for awesome roommates who wait for me and cook family dinners :)

Two trials down, I still had one more to go the next morning. Not overly-excited to go to another trial for a most likely mediocre part-time job.... maybe it was fate, that the girl called to tell me she was sick and had to reschedule my trial for the next day, because just moments later, I received a call and had an impromptu phone interview for a receptionist position at a hotel resort in Broome (Western Australia)... This would be one of those good jobs that I hadn't given up hope with quite yet. Phone interview a success, I got called back just minutes later to ask if I could do a skype interview with the manager later that day. WOO!!!!

I THINK I did alright with my first ever skype interview! They seemed to like me! I made them laugh! haha is that an ok thing to make my judgement off of? I kind of love my sense of humor, it makes me happy when other people seem to get it haha. Admitting that he was a bit hesitant that I don't have experience doing hotel reception, he did promise that if they offer me the position and for whatever reason it didn't work out, he would guarantee me some other job at the resort. The whole conversation seemed very optimistic, but they did have a few more interviews to do.... Keeping my fingers crossed very tightly for this one!!
